Reamde

New novel by Neil Stephenson. His last novel (Anathem) was an absolute masterpiece, so I am looking forward to this one (Reamde), which looks like it is more of a return to his earlier high-tech thrillers like Cryptonomicon (which I also enjoyed very much).

My Phone doesn’t understand me…

Most Americans usually compliment me on my English, but now my personal assistant SIRI finally let’s me know in a not so subtile way that I am not quite there yet.

Yesterday I needed to know the dollar to euro exchange rate, so I asked her:

“How many euros are there in a dollar”

This resulted in some hilarious searches:

  • “How many euros under in the door”
  • “How many euros on getting a bowler”
  • “How many euros are there in a door”
  • “How many euros are there any Mendola”
  • “How many euros are there in Dolomar”
    (according to wookieepedia:
The Dolomar sector was a sector located within the Core Worlds. Planets in the sector included Balfron, Caprioril, Dolomar, Kamparas, Pantolomin, Phorliss and Wor Tandell)
  • “How many euros are there in the Belarre”
  • “How many euros are there in the Gollarre”
It took some effort to stay polite, but on my eight effort she finally understood me and came up with an answer from Wolfram:
I guess we need to work on our relation for a bit (and I need to work on my accent).

Suffe Updates

Somehow over the last years more and more equipment is sneaking into the home which has the great feature of allowing firmware updates. It is of course perfectly possible to ignore this feature, but of course not for any self-proclaimed gadget freak. Even more so if you like being on the bleeding edge, by trying out the latest beta versions. Staying up2date sometimes feels like professional juggling.

This list is probably not even complete:

  • TV (2x)
  • Phone (2x)
  • Tablet (3x)
  • Computer (2x)
  • Laptop (2x)
  • Video Camera
  • NAS
  • PVR
  • appleTV (2x)
  • Router
  • Wireless Base Station
  • Switch
  • Game Console
  • Car Navigation

To keep track of all these “suffe updates” (as the kids call them), I will use this blog as a change log from now on….
